Organization

Prof. Dr. med. Peter Rieckmann has been Chief Physician of the Neurology Clinic at Medical Park Loipl-Bischofswiesen since 1.10.2017. After completing his general studies in Hamburg, he began his medical training in Göttingen in 1982. Supplemented by study visits to Vienna, London and Bombay, he successfully completed his studies in human medicine in 1988 and received several awards for his doctorate. After a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA, he completed his specialist training at the Neurological University Clinic in Göttingen. During this time, he conducted intensive research in the field of neuroimmunology and was heavily involved in the development of numerous drugs and new care concepts for patients with multiple sclerosis. His research work has been honored with numerous prestigious awards (including the Gerhard Hess Prize of the German Research Foundation).

From 1996-2007, Prof. Rieckmann was senior physician and head of the clinical research group for multiple sclerosis at the University Hospital of Würzburg. There, together with colleagues from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, he developed the first therapy guidelines for MS. In 2007, he accepted a professorship at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, where he headed the clinical MS research program. As part of this work, he developed concepts to improve the rehabilitation of acute damage to the central nervous system (CNS = brain and spinal cord).

He returned to Germany in 2009 and became Head of the Neurology Clinic at the academic teaching hospital in Bamberg. There he established neuromodulation procedures to promote rehabilitation processes in the CNS. Together with senior physician colleagues in Bamberg and with funding from the Bavarian state government, he founded the first German Heart-Brain Center there in 2016.

His intensified interest in improving repair processes in the nervous system has now led him into rehabilitation medicine in order to integrate these innovative approaches into the standard of care. In 2019, the first Center for Clinical Neuroplasticity was founded at Medical Park Loipl under the direction of Prof. Rieckmann.
